My Picks for Portable Charging Solutions

After the airing of my "Experts On Call" segment on AM800 I have had some inquiries about which portable charging solutions are best. If you missed it click here.

What I talked about was making sure you check how many milliamps the charger has. This is usually labelled on the box or the unit itself as mAh. The more milliamps, the more charges you will get out of the portable battery.

There are a few different solutions you can get your hands on:


  • Juice Pack - this is a battery pack that is a cell phone case, no external wires required
  • Power Tube - These are small compact chargers that can fit in your pocket. You can usually get 1-1 1/2 charges out of them
  • Power Packs/Power Stations - These are large battery packs with high output. You can get multiple charges and even charge larger devices such as cameras or tablets.

I can only speak on the products that I have actually used myself:

MiPow Power Tube ($34.99-$54.99)




This is a compact little power tube that can charge anything via USB. The price depends on how the output and also if it's Lightning (iPhone) or Micro USB (Samsung, Blackberry, LG, HTC, etc). I have been using this for about 8 months now and I get anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 charges out of it. For my iPad, it will give it a full charge. You can charge your device via the USB port OR there is a built in end that fits directly into your charging port of your phone or tablet.


Mophie Juice Pack Helium ($79)



Mophie makes some really great charging solutions from power packs to juice packs. This particular juice pack will give you one full charge when your device goes dead. You check to see how much juice is left from the battery gauge at the back of the case. Simply hit the switch to start charging. This case charges via USB and can charge the phone and case simultaneously. For more on Mophie and compatibility with your device click here

I know it's been a while since the release of the iPhone 5c and 5s, but I finally had a chance to get one in my hands and try it out. I am 100% with you when people say "It's the same phone" and for the most part you are right.
