How To Tell If Your Smartphone Is Virus Infected

I often have customers come in to the store with the fear that their smartphone has been compromised by malicious software. Although viruses are more common on desktop computers, they still can exist on our mobile devices including smartphones and tablets.

How Do You Know If You Are Infected?

One good way to tell if you are the victim of a mobile virus is an unusual increase in mobile data usage. If you are a moderate data user and one month you get a bill for massive overages, this could be potential virus behaviour.

A mobile virus has the ability to rapidly drain your phone's battery, delete personal data or even take control of certain features of the device. Depending on which virus it is, it could potentially send unwanted text messages, make long distance phone calls or take unauthorized videos and pictures using your camera!

How Do You Stop It?

Best case scenario, do a factory wipe. There are plenty of applications that claim they will remove viruses, adware and other malicious software, but the fact is they may not completely remove it. Security wipe or Factory reset will ensure that all your information and remnants of a virus will be removed.

How Can You Prevent This?

Updating your OS and Apps regularly is a good security measure. Those pesky app updates that flood our devices are actually helpful! They contain security updates and bug fixes that help your device be more secure.

Only download apps from the App Store! Many open sourced devices such as Android and Blackberry will allow you to install apps from 3rd party vendors. Although, most of these apps are quite harmless, you could be opening yourself up to Adware or spam.

Don't open attachments from unfamiliar recipients. Many times people fall victim to e-mail scams. If you receive an e-mail with any .zip, .exe or .dmg attachments, do not open these. This is a file that contains the virus.

Download an anti-virus App. There are various kinds of anti-virus apps that you can download from the app store. The most reputable are McAfee and Norton. With these apps, you get what you pay for, so if you are downloading a FREE version, it probably isn't protecting you as much as it should be.
