How to Stay Safe Online and Keep Your Digital Footprint Clean

What is a digital footprint? It's a collection of data that is left behind every time you enter passwords, usernames, bank account details, visit websites or basically click on anything. It is very important that you are educated enough to stay safe when entering the wonderful world of the Internet. Here's some tips on how to stay safe:

1. Don't Leave a Big Trail - Ask yourself, does the application or website I'm visiting really need all this information to function? Think twice about enabling services like geotagging and location services. These services will let the entire world know exactly where you are. In fact many home invaders use this information to see when you aren't home to break in at the most opportune times.

2. Screen your E-mails - Many times we will receive e-mails from companies or services that we may have never subscribed for. Think twice about clicking on the link to the service they may be offering. It's best to flag these e-mails and send them to the Junk Mail folder, this way next time you get an e-mail it will go straight into Junk.

3. Shop Safe - When shopping online, use reputable sites such as Amazon, eBay or even big retail stores like Wal-Mart. If you are trying to follow the help out the little guy trend, online is not the place for that. Reputable sites use secure services such as SSL to protect you from internet thieves. Only buy from a site that has SSL enabled. Look for the little lock icon at the top of your page or check to see if your URL has https. The "S" stands for secure. If everything checks out. you can be rest assured that you are shopping safe.

4. Update Your Software - Always update your software to the latest version and only update applications that are verified by your device's operating software. Make sure you aren't connected to a Public Wi-Fi when doing so. Unsecured Wi-FI connections such as McDonald's or Starbucks free Wi-Fi is not secured and is a breeding ground for hackers. Update your OS either on a home secured Wi-Fi or through your cellular data connection if possible.

I hope this helps you have a better understanding of the dangers of the cyber world and gives a little more peace of mind. For more information call 519-250-5070 to book a TELUS Wise session.
